Coronavirus: new advice on self isolation

The Prime Minister has just announced new advice that will affect all employers.

If anyone in a household develops the virus (or has symptoms) the whole household must self isolate for 14 days. Plus, he recommends that all staff should avoid non essential travel and work from home where possible.

It also indicated that people who are considered high risk are going to be advised - probably within the next few days - to severely restrict their movements for 12 weeks. They may also have to self isolate for that time.

People considered to be at high risk of being very adversely affected by the virus are:

  • Those aged 70 and over - even if they are otherwise fit and healthy
  • Pregnant women
  • Anyone with an underlying health condition (including those people who are recommended to have the winter flu jab)
  • Anyone with profound conditions - such as those with cancer

Employers will therefore need to adapt their policies to comply with this advice.
