Grand Designs: Register of self build and custom house builders goes live on 1st April 2016

From 1 April 2016, it should be easier for those inspired by Kevin McCloud to find the land they need to build the home of their dreams.

The registers, which measure the level of demand for self-build plots, are intended to complement measures in the Housing and Planning Bill. The measures, if enacted, require local planning  authorities to ensure that they can supply enough serviced plots to meet that demand.

As the average episode of Grand Designs makes clear, however, finding the right site is only the first hurdle standing between would-be developers and the home of their dreams. Getting that home built is frequently an even greater challenge...

From 1 April councils will have to keep a register of aspiring self and custom house builders when planning for future housing and land use.

As part of government plans to provide more homes, new measures and guidance have been put in place to clearly set out the procedure local authorities will have to take when people wish to register their interest for a plot of land.

The Housing and Planning Minister said that more and more people want to build their own home and today’s move will help unlock the massive potential the custom build industry has to expand and help meet our future housing needs”
