Houses to be built on twelve Ministry Of Defence sites

The Ministry of Defence announced yesterday that it will be releasing twelve sites in high value parts of the country for housing, with the profits to be re-invested in the armed forces.

It is believed that the release will provide land for a further 15,000 new homes -  forming just over 9% of the governments target of building 160,000 new homes by 2020.

The twelve sites in question are:

• Kneller Hall in Twickenham
• Claro and Deverell barracks in Ripon
• RAF sites Molesworth and Alconbury in Cambridgeshire, and Mildenhall in Suffolk.
• Lodge Hill in Kent
• Craigiehall in Edinburgh
• HMS Nelson Wardroom in Portsmouth
• Hullavington Airfield in Wiltshire
• RAF Barnham in Suffolk
• MOD Feltham in London

The disposal, which will generate £500 million, will provide the land for around 15,000 new homes in support of the government’s ambition to build 160,000 by 2020.

These sites will form the first tranche of the MOD’s plan to reduce by 30 per cent the size of its built estate. MOD’s estate spans one per cent of all UK land and covers 452,000 hectares. As part of that plan, the Ministry has committed to generating £1 billion through land sales during this parliament and contributing up to 55,000 homes.”
