Addressing work-life balance

Last week it was announced that the European Commission has launched a public consultation on proposals to address the challenges of work-life balance for carers and parents. This is a positive move and hopefully the consultation will consider more flexible ways of working and conducting business to fit in with the modern world.

In addition to the commencement of the consultation, we also saw Spotify last week announce that it will offer enhanced parental leave for staff (up to 6 months' at full pay) so that staff "ease back into their job" with greater flexibility. Spotify is a Swedish company and Sweden has the most generous childcare benefits in the world so their proposals may be fairly unsurprising. However, perhaps the UK will now start to move towards a new way of balancing work and family.

Spotify is to offer staff up to six months’ parental leave with 100% pay as part of a global policy it says recognises the importance of “a healthy work-family balance”.”
